These programs allow talented underprivileged teenagers to fulfill their potential by providing them with a challenging program of enrichment and leadership training at the Ruppin Institute of Marine Science. Talented 7th graders from all backgrounds of Israeli society in the lower socio-economic levels are chosen - programs run for 2 years.

Smoky Simon

“The War of Independence:  the Role of Machal (Overseas Volunteers) and the Birth of the Israel Air Force”.

Harold "Smoky" Simon was trained as an accountant in Johannesburg, South Africa. When WWII broke out he volunteered for the South African Air Force and became a navigator-bombardier participating in many missions for the duration of the war.

In May 1948 he flew to Palestine, together with his wife, to help the fledgling state.

He was one of the founders of the IAF, serving as Chief of Air Operations in the IAF for two-and-a-half years. He flew on 24 operational missions during the War of Independence.
