“Orthodoxy and Reform from 18th to 20th Centuries”

Elkan Levy
The rise of the ‘Adjectival Jew’ – Orthodox, Conservative, Reform - has led to a series of internal divisions within the Jewish people which threaten severely to undermine Jewish unity, and particularly at a time when anti-Semitism is undergoing an undeniable resurgence. How did this happen? Have any of the tactics used produced a desirable result? How should we go forward?
Educated in London, Israel and New York, Elkan D Levy has filled a number of communal offices in British Jewry including President of the United Synagogue and Minister for Small Communities. He chaired the committee that produced the latest edition of the Singer’s Prayer book, the standard Siddur of Anglo Jewry, which has developed into the whole series of Koren-Sacks Siddurim and Machzorim.
By profession Elkan was a Solicitor (lawyer) in private practice for 30 years, and also lectured at the London School of Jewish Studies. In his spare time he is keenly interested in Freemasonry and Railways.
Elkan made Aliyah in 2011 and lives in Netanya. He has two children, both living in Tel Aviv, and four gorgeous Israeli grandchildren.
