ESRA Rishon Lezion

Reflections of a Jewish American Diplomat

Efraim Cohen
Efraim will describe his experiences as one of the only observant Jews ‎in the American Diplomatic Corps.

Through a series of humorous and ‎touching vignettes, he will consider such questions as: ‎
•    Is the State Department really anti-Semitic? ‎
•    How do you fight perceptions of “dual loyalty”? ‎
•    How do Jewish principles impact your role as a diplomat? ‎
•    And, of course, what type of herring do you serve the ‎Ambassador at your son’s Brit?‎

Efraim will also offer timely observations on Israel’s Hasbara mistakes ‎and American foreign policy in the region

Efraim Cohen, born and educated in the US (Yeshiva University and ‎Harvard Law School), served as an American diplomat for nearly 25 ‎years, including postings to London, Cape Town, La Paz, Baghdad and ‎two tours at the US Embassy in Tel Aviv. He managed economic ‎sanctions against Iraq and Libya, and served in Iraq following the ‎Second Gulf War. He now lives with his family in Zichron Yaacov.‎
