“The War of Independence: the Role of Machal (Overseas Volunteers) and the Birth of the Israel Air Force”

with Mahal/IAF veteran 'Smoky' Simon

Harold "Smoky" Simon trained as an accountant in Johannesburg, ‎South Africa. When WWII broke out he volunteered for the South ‎African Air Force and became a navigator-bombardier participating ‎in many missions for the duration of the war. Harold "Smoky" Simon trained as an accountant in Johannesburg, ‎South Africa. When WWII broke out he volunteered for the South ‎African Air Force and became a navigator-bombardier participating ‎in many missions for the duration of the war. In May 1948 he flew to Palestine, together with his wife, to help ‎the fledgling state. ‎ He was one of the founders of the IAF, serving as Chief of Air ‎Operations in the IAF for two-and-a-half years. He flew on 24 ‎operational missions during the War of Independence.‎
