Bayit Cham

A 'home away from home' for teenage girls at risk provides a safe after-school haven with a hot meal and the attentive ear of professionals.

The Problem

In distressed neighborhoods, home life is often characterized by overcrowding and noise. Siblings typically share space without a quiet corner for homework or a private space for socializing; hence they often take to the streets. Add to this parents who, of necessity, work and you have unsupervised children in less than ideal circumstances.

The Solution

An afternoon center that offers a welcoming and safe environment for teenage girls at risk.

‎The Method

Bayit Cham (translation: A Warm Home) is a welcoming clubhouse that offers a 'home away from home' for young teenage girls deemed at risk due to their home and neighborhood environments. Open throughout the year, Sunday through Thursday, from 13:00 to 18:00, it is a place where 13 to 17 year old girls find a safe, supportive environment where they can enjoy quiet time or socialize, receive a hot meal, and turn to a trustworthy adult with their problems or questions. It is staffed by professional social workers who offer counseling and organize activities from drama clubs to games, films and lectures. Equipment includes TV and computers. A qualified chef prepares cooked meals on the premises providing the girls with the welcoming aromas of healthy home cooking and baking.

Participants

24-28 teenage Ethiopian girls
