Sewing Centers

Provide Ethiopian adults with sewing skills, including sewing machines, fabric, professional instruction, and a social venue.

The Problem

Having come from a very different environment, some Ethiopian immigrants lack the know-how or required skills to find employment in their new setting, as well as the means for re-education or attending vocational courses. The result is poverty, delayed integration into society, loss of self-esteem and the respect of their children.

The Solution

Sewing courses for adult Ethiopian men and women providing skills, a social center and a potential means of employment.

The Method

Two sewing centers are currently operating once a week: in Netanya's Neot Shaked and in Hefzibah suburbs.  Adult participants are provided with sewing machines, fabric and instruction by a qualified teacher who teaches them the skills required for making and repairing clothing. Some participants are given sewing machines to take home, enabling them to work from home and earn an income.  Volunteers assist with teaching, maintaining the machines, collecting fabric and obtaining donated sewing machines. As an added bonus to participants, the centers provide not only a place where they can get out and socialize; they also organize an annual day trip to places of interest around the country.

Participants

Adults aged 40 to 70, attending in groups of 8-12
