Where is Israel? The standard answer, "the Middle East", is less self-evident than people think. After all, this term is clearly a colonial relic of the London-or-Paris-centric world of yesteryear (half-way to the Far East…), and lumps together quite different regions (from the Gulf to North Africa). In real terms, and in today's strategic, economic and diplomatic terms, Israel is an Eastern Mediterranean country. This has been brought into focus in recent months, as we line up with Egypt, Greece and France (backed by the UAE, by the way) against Erdogan's overt neo-Ottoman ambitions. Gas resources are part of the story: but ideology and identity are the real drivers. All this requires Israel to re-define her place in the world.
Dr. Lerman was deputy director for foreign policy and international affairs at the National Security Council in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office. He held senior posts in IDF Military Intelligence for over 20 years. He also served for eight years as director of the Israel and Middle East office of the American Jewish Committee. He teaches in the Middle East studies program at Shalem College in Jerusalem, and in post-graduate programs at Tel Aviv University and the National Defense College. He is an expert on Israel’s foreign relations, and on the Middle East. He is presently Vice President of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security.
