This lecture on the history of Jewish and Israeli art through the perspective of the body will survey more than a hundred years from the early days of Zionism to contemporary Israeli art. We will see how attitudes towards masculinity, Eros and health reflect in representation of Jewish body.
Jonathan Hirschfeld is an Israeli artist. He has a 2004 BFA, from Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design, Jerusalem and a 2011 MFA, from the Interdisciplinary program in Arts, Tel Aviv University.
In his paintings and drawings he uses world mythologies to evoke and to express personal, political and artistical ideas. His work maintains a close relationship to early Israeli modernist traditions and his unique approach to modernism places him at the heart of contemporary discourses.
