Making the Desert Bloom

with Professor Simon Barak

online via zoom

Simon Barak is an Associate Professor at Ben-Gurion University’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research (BIDR) (https://in.bgu.ac.il/en/bidr/Pages/default.aspx). BIDR is situated in the heart of the Negev Desert on the Sede Boker campus. Its mission is to fulfill David Ben Gurion’s dream of “making the desert bloom” by researching and developing the technologies that will allow sustainable development of the Negev and drylands all over the world.

Professor Barak’s research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of plant tolerance to harsh environmental stresses such as heat, drought, and high soil salinity. Prof. Barak is a recognized leader in studying how plants are able to survive in some of the world’s harshest environments such as those found in the Negev desert.

He will be presenting a film that he produced showing some of the incredible and pioneering agricultural enterprises in the Negev, some of which involve the expertise of BIDR scientists.
