Join us for a fascinating examination of the South African Jewish community response to apartheid by leaders of the community active in South Africa during this turbulent time.

Professor (Emeritus) Gideon Shimoni, past head of Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Institute of Contemporary Jewry, held Argov Chair of Israel-Diaspora Relations. Amongst his publications: Community and Conscience: The Jews in Apartheid South Africa 
Eileen Franklin, BA, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa; MA, Yeshiva University, New York; former director of Jewish Studies at Mt. Sinai College, Sydney. During apartheid, she founded the Jewish Relief Committee helping rehabilitate apartheid victims and their families in Cape Town squatter camps. Eileen’s photos depicting the suffering of Black South African were used by Bishop Desmond Tutu in his missions to Europe and the UK to promote sanctions against South Africa..
Rabbi Selwyn Franklin, ordained by Rabbi JB Soloveitchik at Yeshiva University, NY, has led congregations in South Africa, Australia and the US. Serving as the Rabbi of the Seapoint Congregation of Cape Town, Selwyn Franklin became deeply involved in the anti-apartheid movement. He founded Jews for Justice which worked together with the United Democratic Front to promote a free, democratic South Africa. Rabbi Franklin’s intervention led to the curtailment of Israeli arms shipments to South Africa.
