Shortly after its establishment, the state of Israel prosecuted and jailed dozens of Holocaust survivors who had served as camp kapos or ghetto police under the Nazis. These trials changed Israel’s understanding of the Holocaust and the suppression of the trial records—long classified by the state—affected history and memory. They cause us to rethink our ideas of complicity and justice and to consider what it means to be a victim in extraordinary circumstances.

Prof. Dan Porat is in the Department of History and Education of the Hebrew University. His research focuses on social, cultural and educational history in Israel. In his books and articles, he examines among other things the representation of the Holocaust and the Israeli-Arab conflict in Israel. His book, Bitter Reckoning, was a Jewish Book Award finalist.
