Education & Welfare Projects

ESRA, founded in 1979 as a non-profit, is Israel's largest English-speaking community, aiding the integration of olim while working toward equality in Israeli society. ESRA aims to help diminish educational and social gaps, especially in the socio-geographic periphery, focusing on education and excellence programs and enhancing personal and social skills in a safe and supportive environment. We also integrate English-speaking immigrants into these projects, helping them feel useful and contributing members of society, thereby serving our two significant aims.

ESRA National Quiz Night

ESRA’s 5th National Quiz held in November 2018 united the whole of the ESRA family for one night ‎when teams in 24 locations comprising almost 500 people enjoyed a fun and challenging evening.

QuizBeerSheva1The ‎questions were tough but there was something for everyone. ‎

The event has grown each year from a modest 10 teams to 24. This year teams from Nahariya to Five ‎Towns, to the Jordan Valley and the Sharon area, and down to the Southern tip of Israel, where Eilat ‎celebrated into the night after winning the contest with 156 points. Following close on their heels ‎were the teams from Raanana - HQ; Raanana - Tanaman; Karmiel and Herzliya, all with over 140 points.‎

Our hearty thanks go to the question compiler David Shulman who spent many long hours trying to find ‎the correct balance of questions. We had eight different categories of questions ranging from Songs ‎of the 60’s and 70’s to the History of Israel.‎

The funds raised from this event go to the Kfar Shmaryahu Social Club project. We use a room at Bet ‎Weil courtesy of Kfar Shmaryahu Council. ESRA pays for the social workers for this lovely group of ‎young disabled people who attend the ‘club’ once a week, giving their parents respite from their ‎stressful lives. ESRA also pays for their transport to and from their homes all over the Sharon area.‎

Comments from our teams:‎

Carolyn Davies, chair of Eilat committee:‎ ‎‘It is such a great thing for Eilat to have won the quiz as we as a city feel very neglected by ‎central government and forgotten, so this has shown we do all have something to contribute and ‎we are very much part of Israel despite so many people claiming Eilat is not really Israel. We raised 1625 NIS.‎

Adele Hunter, Raanana:‎ Everyone had a great time and even if we couldn’t answer some of the questions it didn’t matter.‎

Sandy Leigh – Mimi’s Marvels, Herzliya:‎ We had a good laugh and a good variety of team members. Lovely cheese and wine spread ‎from our lovely hostess Mimi. Questions were of varying degrees of difficulty, which was good ‎for all our players pulling together as a team. Thank you to the team.‎

Michael Altman, Netanya:‎ This was the first time I was reading the questions I could see the reactions and change the ‎approach to get wider smiles. What I did notice was that people were happy to be there and I ‎think found the questions interesting. I was amazed at who knew what and that in itself gave ‎some people that seemed on the quieter side get deserved recognition and it made them feel ‎good. ‎

Baruch Tanaman, Raanana: The Quiz was great fun and this year team Raanana - Tanaman did better than ever before, the ‎team amazing me with their general knowledge. Food was excellent but most of all we had the ‎pleasure of knowing that the money raised is going to a great cause, putting smiles on the faces ‎of the handicapped young adults at ESRA’s Kfar Shmaryahu Youth Club.‎
‎ ‎
Jacky Shulman, Raanana: Not quite the Eggheads team, but no matter winners or losers, we had a really great fun ‎filled evening. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food. ‎
