Education & Welfare Projects

ESRA, founded in 1979 as a non-profit, is Israel's largest English-speaking community, aiding the integration of olim while working toward equality in Israeli society. ESRA aims to help diminish educational and social gaps, especially in the socio-geographic periphery, focusing on education and excellence programs and enhancing personal and social skills in a safe and supportive environment. We also integrate English-speaking immigrants into these projects, helping them feel useful and contributing members of society, thereby serving our two significant aims.

English garden at Neve Zeev

The Neve Zeev Community Center’s garden has become an English-speaking learning environment for children from local elementary schools in Beer Sheva.

Rationale

Schoolchildren from the geo-social periphery are not generally exposed to after-school enrichment activities.  This project aims at strengthening children’s English speaking skills, providing them with an enriching after-school activity, and enhancing their knowledge of English while they work in the garden, tending flowers and vegetables, together with native English speakers. The experience of working together in a group also helps improve social skills and builds their confidence to chat in English with the volunteers.

Objectives

Enriching children’s English language knowledge and skills.
Improvingsocial skills through working in a group.
Teaching the value of nurturing plant life.
