At the time of the American Civil War, which wracked America for four years from 1861 -1865, there were about 150,000 Jews in total in the north and the south - with the south being the far smaller proportion. Approximately 10,000 donned uniform - dividing the Jewish population along war lines.
Whilst the war did sever the Jewish population, it is interesting to note that, prior to the Civil War, Jews had not taken public stands on slavery. This terrible war was to change all that.

Since making aliya about 24 years ago, Bonita Posen has been delivering popular talks on literature in venues throughout Israel, including, for many years, seminars in her home. She is particularly interested in
the Yiddishists and modern Israeli writers, but also in world classics with particular emphasis on their historical background. Sometimes, history becomes the primary focus - as is the case with "Jews in the
American Civil War".
