This lecture builds on our previous deep dive into Haifa’s lesser-known history and significant archaeological sites, tracing the city’s story from the Crusades to the early 20th century. We begin with the dramatic battles fought in and around Haifa during the Crusader period and explore the emergence of monastic traditions on Mount Carmel. Along the way, we will uncover surprising spiritual landmarks that once drew large numbers of pilgrims from afar. Highlights include the enduring presence of Jewish life in Haifa across the centuries, Christian legends and archaeological remains in the “Valley of the Martyrs” (Wadi Siah), the layered history of Stella Maris, and the city’s transformation in the twilight years of the Ottoman Empire.
